Silk is a fabric that has a reputation of being expensive, luxurious and exclusive but we don’t see it that way. Instead, we see no reason why you shouldn’t be able to own this fine fabric at a price that you can afford.
The simple answer to why silk is so expensive is because it takes more time to make, so that equals higher costs in paying for the craftsmanship that’s involved in its production.
The second part to that answer is that its royal history allows for easy price inflation. It costs US $22 to make a Silk V-Neck Camisole but traditionally it’s sold for US $150. Silk’s exclusive reputation of being reserved only for royalty and nobility has followed the fabric through time. Even today, it’s seen as a fabric that’s marketed to the wealthy. The inflation in price is seen in the 6-8 time mark-up used by traditional retailers. At Grana, we price our Silk V-Neck Camisoles made from 100% silk Georgette Satin with a 2-3 time mark-up of US $49. Which definitely leaves more money for Taco Tuesday…and then some.
Meet Our Silk
At Grana, we aim to deliver the same high quality silk without the luxury price tag. The kind of silk you’d want to be friend’s with – and aren’t embarrassed to take to that hole-in-the-wall Thai spot you love because you know it won’t judge you. That’s the kind of silk we want to make.
This is why our silk is designed in-house and why we don’t use any agents, distributors, wholesalers, retailers or traditional brick-and-mortars. By skipping over all these traits of traditional retail, we’re able to reduce costs and still provide luxury quality with only a 2-3 times mark-up. This makes it the kind of silk you don’t have to be knighted to enjoy. A silk of the people, if we may.
Location, Location, Location
Location’s important and silk is no exception. Where your silk comes from says a lot about the quality of the product and the craft that’s gone into making it. That’s why our silk is, spun, woven, cut and sewn at our factory in Huzhou, China which has been dubbed ‘The City of Silk’. Huzhou’s been in the silk game for over 4500 years – so they know what’s up when it comes to producing the best quality. We visit our factory regularly and build long-lasting relationships with the people who help make our garments great. Our in-house silk designer Samantha does quality checks in person to ensure our our silk is up to the highest of standards – so we can keep offering you the best for less.realdeal / by Grana / 07.20.16
