Sadly summer is leaving us. Evenings are getting cooler, the days are getting shorter and it’s time to put a blanket back on the bed. The seasonal wardrobe rotate is upon us, so say ba-bye to those bikinis and hello to chunky knitwear.
But don’t be too quick in discounting all your summer clothes. At Grana we are all about multi-purpose, trans-seasonal items. A romantic summer dress pairs well with black tights and a leather jacket. Silk singlets are great for layering under knits without looking bulky. Our favourite summer item to wear in winter: denim shorts.
Previously a fashion no-no, wearing denim shorts in winter has been a huge trend over the past few years. First only if the shorts were dark coloured and tailored. Then light denim became acceptable so long as they weren’t cut-offs. Ha! Kate Moss and half of London completely destroyed that rule. Last year, we read that they were all great except for white denim – well we’re determined to prove that wrong too.
We styled our Grana ladies in their favourite denim shorts to create 4 distinct looks. Read on for our tips on how to wear your denim shorts through autumn and winter – no matter what the style or colour.
- They are like jeans (only shorter)
Think of your denim shorts just like jeans and suddenly they become really easy to style. Wear with knit wear, a plaid shirt or even a poncho. Almost any winter item that goes with jeans will go with denim shorts too.
- Layer Up
The key to getting denim shorts right in winter is layering. It’s all about looking effortless so throw on some relaxed layers like a cardigan, denim jacket, an open shirt or a scarf.
- Keep Your Head and Feet Cosy
We lose body heat most quickly through our head, torso, armpits and feet so as long as you keep these areas warm you’ll get away with showing a bit of leg without freezing. Add a hat or a beanie and wear chunky socks with boots or a good pair of sneakers.
- Over the knee is back!
Thigh high boots and over the knee socks have made a comeback! We think denim shorts are the perfect way to show them off and this trend has us more excited about the colder months than anything else!
- Bust out the Tights
If just thinking about a few inches of exposed skin between the top of your boots and the bottom of your short shorts has you shivering (first of all you’re a big sissy) bust out some tights. The rule here – there are no rules. Opaque looks grungy and super cool while sheer stockings look really chic. Wool tights, printed tights, coloured tights… whatever look you’re going for, we’ve seen them all work.
- Trench Coats
Is there any other item that can so completely transform an outfit? T-shirt and shorts, boring. Add a trench coat, amazing. Perfect for the in between seasons and cooler evenings.
