The t-shirt is a strong contender for centre stage in a minimalist wardrobe, everyone’s got one, they come in every colour and they’re so easy, so so so easy. But what exactly makes a nice t-shirt cost so much? Are you paying for a high quality t-shirt, or just the logo or name that’s on it?
Lying Sack of Price Tags
Being such a wardrobe celebrity, the t-shirt can be found in many types, and we’re not talking v-neck, crew neck, long sleeve, short sleeve types (although of course they come in that too) we’re talking quality types. Sometimes, you can find t-shirts for less than a slice of pizza and in other times you can find t-shirts that cost more than your monthly car loan. So, seriously…what’s going on? What’s going on is different levels of quality, combined with dishonest pricing.
Luxury t-shirts cost more because they have detailed and expensive trimmings and generally a luxury brand name has a reputation. But what’s not true is the price you pay. Nope, that’s a flat-out hoax. Yes, it costs more to make, but it doesn’t cost 6-8 times more.
Grab Your Quality Measuring Cup
The quality of a t-shirt is based on questions like: where’s the fabric from? How were the fibres treated? How was it cut and sewn? How was it dyed? Where’s it made? Features like a modern cut, detailing in the rib & stitching, the tension around the sleeves, the stretch and retention of the shape, will also add to the cost. Time spent on these details means more time spent on labour which means a higher price tag on the final product. So, a quality t-shirt takes longer to make than a fast fashion one – this makes sense.
Now it seems obvious that the t-shirt that costs less than a slice of pizza isn’t very good quality. This may not bother you because, if it falls apart or fades, it can be replaced. However, the ‘it’s cheap I can throw it out’ mentality becomes more expensive in the long run than the ‘buy better and buy less’ mentality. Not only does buying quality cost less in the long run, you also get a really nice garment out of it.
How We Do the Classic T-shirt
Our t-shirts are made from the world’s best Peruvian Pima cotton, our cotton is handpicked to ensure that our fibres (which are twice the length of standard cotton fibres – just saying) are kept intact, which means the end product is incredibly durable and exceptionally soft. Our cotton is spun into yarn following traditional methods but using state-of-the-art machinery. Our team in Lima also draw on decades of experience and knowledge when it comes to the knitting process, to ensure our t-shirt’s have just the right amount of stretch to them. Sounds fancy and expensive doesn’t it? But it’s not. Our basic t-shirt is just US$15. Seems kind of crazy but it makes total sense because our business model uses a 2-3 times markup.
This means we can make top notch quality clothing and get it to you for the lowest possible costs – it’s kind of our thing.
